Elizabeth Sweeney

Elizabeth Rose Sweeney 95, went to be with the Lord February 4, 2020.
She was born August 14, 1924 to John and Theresa Schela in Devils Lake, ND. She was the sixth of eight siblings. Her first teaching job was in Sarles, ND where she met and married Raymond John Sweeney. They married September 3, 1946 in Devils Lake, ND. They lived in Sarles, ND and raised 5 children. Elizabeth taught grade school in Sarles for 32 years, teaching all five of her children.
She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Sarles, also a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi of Whitefish.
She loved to travel and see the many places she taught about. Reading and quilting were among her many hobbies.
She spent her entire life in the Sarles and Devils Lake area of ND until she moved to Whitefish, MT in 2014.
Elizabeth is survived by her youngest sister Lorraine Metzger of Byron, MN and her children Sheila Picard of Whitefish, MT, Edward and Lynette Sweeney of Fargo, ND, Catherine and Bob Wallace of Grandbury, TX, Albert and Rose Sweeney of Marion, MT, and Perry and Mary Sweeney of Rathdrum, ID, 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
She was a devout catholic her entire life. A Celebration of Holy Mass will be held February 11, 2020 at St. Richard’s Catholic in Columbia Falls, MT at 11 A.M. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Munich, ND at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Glaucoma Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.
