Tribute

Denis Twohig, 83, died January 6, 2023 at home with his wife Shirley and son Jim by his side.
Denis was born in in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, James & Louise Twohig, brothers John and Jim; daughters Julie and Shauna. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 54 years, son James, daughters Patricia and Cynthia, granddaughter Lily, grandson D.J. (Denis James).
Denis was the founding father of the Glacier Mountaineering Society, which was started in 1981. With a climbing career spanning over 50 years, Denis and Shirley have climbed mountains all over the Western United States and into Canada.
Denis holds awards with the Glacier Mountaineering Society for ascents of all six of Glacier’s 10,000 ft. peaks and all five of Glacier’s technical peaks, and received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award.
Denis always wanted to take a “more interesting and challenging” route when climbing mountains. His extreme drive, determination and intestinal fortitude to accomplish these feats of the vertical world is not for the faint-hearted; supreme physical conditioning is required. Den’s climbing philosophy is encapsulated in a statement he made many years ago: “While we know that climbing demands much, in return it has much to offer. As a recreation, it could hardly be a healthier activity. As an art, it requires the ultimate in control, judgment and technique. As a lifestyle, it is adventure and challenge unparalleled. The fusion of skill, craft, technique and sound judgment in itself makes climbing a rewarding experience, and when done in a mountain wilderness setting of soaring heights and extraordinary vistas, alone or with a few chosen companions, one of the highest states of euphoria reached.” ~Denis Twohig
Denis was a self-employed graphic designer, creating beautiful souvenirs for Glacier Park. In 1999 (at age 60) he went to the University of Montana and graduated with honors as a pharmacy tech. He worked at North Valley Hospital pharmacy in Whitefish for several years and ultimately started a company called Techsol, publishing 15 editions of a drug reference pocket guide.
Denis was happiest when he was in the mountains…climbing and hiking with his many friends.
Den’s ashes have been released on a mountain summit where his climbing buddy, Gary Yates, will greet him.
Climb high, Denis…we love you and miss you!
